"Ropin' a Grizzly"

36 x 72 inches, Oil on Canvas

Exhibited at the 52nd annual Cowboy Artists of America Show and Sale - Cowboy Crossings 2017, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Loren's inspiration: "I was inspired by Charlie Russell's 'Roping a Grizzly' and the late great Cowboy Artist Jack Swanson's 'Vaquero Sport'.  I wanted to depict a grizzly roping scene from the early 1900's - around 1910.  When an old cowboy friend saw some early sketches for this painting, he reached in his pocket for his old flip phone and showed several pictures of him and two other cowboys roping a black bear in the Pryor Mountains [of Montana].  After they got it roped and took pictures, they undallied their ropes and let the bear go.  The bear ran down in a coulee, sat down, and proceeded to take each rope off.  As soon as he had each rope off, he ran up the canyon as fast as he could."
